Thanks to double podium: Mercedes-AMG Team Toksport WRT keeps title chances in ADAC GT Masters alive
Mercedes-AMG Team Toksport WRT had almost given up hope of winning the ADAC GT Masters title – but a strong race weekend at the Sachsenring puts Luca Stolz and Maro Engel back in the title fight. With two podium finishes, the Mercedes-AMG duo took a big step forward and is in second place in the drivers’ standings now, four races before the end of the season.
After a strong qualifying, Luca Stolz started the first race on Saturday from third on the grid and made up another position directly in the first corners. As the race progressed, he defended this position and handed over to Maro Engel at the mandatory pit stop, who crossed the finish line in second place. With this good result, the Toksport duo collected important points for the championship again.
The Mercedes-AMG Team Toksport WRT also impressed with a great performance on Sunday. Maro Engel placed fifth in qualifying, which he was able to maintain at the start despite a collision in front of him. Later, the AMG duo benefited from a penalty against an other car and a perfect driver change, with Luca Stolz taking over the cockpit of the Mercedes-AMG GT3. The German returned to the track in third place.
But Stolz was not satisfied with that. The German fought his way up to second place and passed in the final corner of the race with a strong maneuver. After their podium finish on Saturday, Luca Stolz and Maro Engel were also able to celebrate a podium on Sunday. In addition, the experienced duo also made a big step forward in the championship. In the drivers’ standings, Engel and Stolz are in second place after the two races at the Sachsenring.
The “League of Supersport cars” is now entering the home stretch. In three weeks the ADAC GT Masters will be held at the Hockenheimring (October 22-24). Two weeks later, the finale will take place at the legendary Nürburgring (November 5 to 7).
