Successful season opener for Toksport WRT in the ADAC GT Masters. Maro Engel and Luca Stolz secured the pole position and won the first race with their Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo on Saturday. On Sunday they finished second in qualifying and the one-hour race. After the first two races of the season at the Lausitzring, Toksport WRT thus leads the team and driver standings.
With this brilliant weekend, Toksport WRT has proven its ambitions as a hot favourite for the championship in the “league of super sports cars”. Already in qualifying on Saturday morning Luca Stolz made it clear that this year the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo is the car to beat. The German took pole position with a lap time of 1:21.867 minutes.
After the start Stolz lost the lead at first, but fought his way back to the top position a little later. Maro Engel, who took over the GT3-Mercedes at the halfway point of the race, also impressed with a strong performance and secured the first triumph in the ADAC GT Masters for himself and Toksport WRT. Luca Stolz celebrated his already sixth victory.
Podium also again on Sunday
Due to Saturday’s success, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo had to drag off a success ballast of 30 kilograms on Sunday. Hopes for a repeat of the previous day’s victory droped down to a minimum thanks to the very close field. Nevertheless, the Mercedes duo was convincing on Sunday as well: Maro Engel finished second on the grid with a lap time of 1:21.328 minutes. The German missed the pole position by merely a hundredth of a second. The starting grid in the ADAC GT Masters is very close: 31 drivers were within one second of each other in qualifying!
However, with outside temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius, Maro Engel and Luca Stolz could not find a way past the later race winner in the one-hour Sunday race. In the end, the Mercedes duo took second place after a flawless and problem-free race. Thanks to the two strong results at the season opener at the Lausitzring, Engel and Stolz are leading the overall standings with a solid lead. Toksport WRT also leads the team classification.
The next two races in the ADAC GT Masters will already take place in two weeks, from 14 to 16 August 2020. The legendary Nürburgring in the Eifel region will host races three and four of the season.
